PAIGC WINS OVERWHELMING 54 SEATS IN GUINEA-BISSAU’S LEGISLATIVE ELECTIONS

The Pai-Terra Ranka coalition of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) founded by Amilcar Cabral has finally won an absolute majority in Guinea Bissau’s legislative elections.

Reports on Thursday, 8th June, from the Electoral Commission revealed that the PAIGC won overwhelming fifty-four (54) Parliamentary seats, whereas President Umaro Sissoco Embalo’s political family, known as the Madem G15, won only 29 seats. The Social Renewal Party (PRS) won 12 seats, followed by the Workers’ Party with 6 seats, and the United People’s Assembly had only one (1) seat.

Following this win by the PAIGC, President Embalo is expected to appoint as Prime Minister, Domingos Simões Pereira who is the present PAIGC President as well as leader of the PAI-Terra Ranka coalition.

There is massive rejoicing among members and supporters of the Pai-Terra Ranka coalition who have gathered at the headquarters of the PAIGC ever since the results were published by the Electoral Commission. Meanwhile, a lot of congratulatory messages have also poured in from PAIGC’s fraternal organisations across the globe.
